About the event
The FCCA Spring, Summer Climate and Health Speaker Series features a discussion on waterborne infection with Dr. Sandra Gompf on Wednesday, May 19th, 2021.
Special Guest Speaker:
Sandra Gompf, MD, FACP, FIDSA
Chief, Infectious Disease Section
Professor, USF Morsani College of Medicine, Infectious Disease and International Medicine
In 2009, her son, Phillip went swimming with his cousins in a lake in Polk County. Five days later, he was dead, the victim Naegleria fowleri meningitis, commonly known as PAM or the brain-eating amoeba. PAM is 99% fatal, and 100% preventable with proper precautions. Pathogens like PAM and Vibrio, the flesh-eating bacteria thrive in warm waters, which are more common in our changing climate. Join the meeting to learn the facts and stay safe!
This event is a part of the FCCA Spring + Summer Speaker Series – Understanding the Climate Crisis as a Public Health Crisis. Our co-sponsors are Moms Clean Air Force and Growing Climate Solutions – Path to Positive Southwest Florida.
