Medical-Legal Partnership on Health & Climate Tools to help you protect your climate-vulnerable patients The December FCCA Meeting features an exciting new tool to help Clinicians improve health outcomes for climate-vulnerable patients. One of our valued members, Dr. Frederick Anderson has been working with FIU Med students Samantha Rodriguez and Miranda Ricart to partner with the Southeast Regional Medical-Legal Partnerships Coalition. Together, they developed a series of letters that clinicians can use to advocate on behalf of patients vulnerable to extreme heat, mold exposure, or other climate-health threats. Clinicians can provide their patients with the letters to send to their employer, landlord, or school. The legal advocates have crafted drafts of four letter templates to be used by clinicians. The letter templates include: • Housing – request to allow tenant to terminate the lease early due to unhealthy conditions (which may be related to climate change) such as presence of mold, etc. • Housing - request for repair of Air Conditioning for the medically vulnerable • School – request for accommodations to include climate mitigation strategies such as access to shade, water breaks, rest for outdoor activities especially for vulnerable children • Employment – request for accommodations to include climate mitigation strategies such as access to water breaks, rest for outdoor activities, etc. Presenters: • Christina Russo Walters, Manager of Public Interest & Medical-Legal Partnerships Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida • Samantha Cools, Staff Attorney MLP, Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida • Frederick Anderson, MD, Associate Professor – FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine & Medical Director – Department of Humanities, Health, and Society • FIU Medical Students Samantha Rodriguez and Miranda Ricart

FCCA's July featured speaker was Dr. Amy Vittor, an infectious disease specialist who shared with us information about how our changing climate is impacting vector-borne disease. We talked about how parents can keep their kids safe from harmful insects while playing outside, what types of symptoms clinicians should look for related to vector-borne disease, and prevention methods. Dr. Vittor also discussed her research on arboviral diseases.

Media Training for Climate Health Professionals

This is a media training designed for health professionals to enhance their confidence talking to the press about climate and health. Many doctors and nurses have little training in talking to the media. However, as climate health advocates, media relations is an important part of our work! This webinar teaches the nuts and bolts about why it's important to work with the media, how to pitch a story or interview, how to prepare for an interview, what to expect with different types of media (e.g., radio, podcast, television, live webstream), and more! This event is hosted by Cliamte Health Now in partnership with Florida Clinicians for Climate Action, and the Medical Society Consortium on Climate & Health.

Climate solutions require many voices raised together to address this health threat and others. Many clinicians have come to the conclusion that responding to climate is part of what it means to be a doctor today.
